FANTASY PROFILE: JUSTIN MORNEAU, 1B, COLORADO ROCKIES

LWOS Ranking 14, Captain’s Value $7.89

Man, Justin Morneau sure likes Coors Field, doesn’t he? After spending 10+ seasons as a Minnesota Twin (and 25 games as a Pittsburgh Pirate), Morneau signed a 2-year deal worth $12.5 million with the Colorado Rockies. Morneau enjoyed a career resurgence in Denver, as he had, by far, his best overall season since suffering a career-threatening concussion in 2010. He didn’t knock in 30 homers like he used to, but had a respectable 17 HR to go along with 82 RBI and an NL-best .319 batting average.

I mentioned that he loves Coors Field, where he hit .327/.363/.515 last year, but don’t get me wrong, he did pretty well on the road too, with a .309/.364/.475 slash line. The power numbers aren’t exactly what you would want out of a fantasy corner infielder, but Morneau still brings plenty of value to the table. Morneau will get you your money’s worth if you take him in the 10-15 range among first basemen.

Note: Keep an eye on the trade rumor mill. Colorado’s signing of Nick Hundley and Micheal McKenry has raised trade rumors for both Wilin Rosario and Morneau. Morneau’s contract has one year left and Rosario is currently up for arbitration, so one or the other is likely to be traded before the end of the year. If Morneau is traded, Rosario will likely move to first base.
