AFCON2015: Update Guinea advances on Drawing of Lots

Guinea will play Ghana in the quarter finals of AFCON2015 after the drawing of lots. Meanwhile Mail, who was tied with them in Group D will be going home early.

Both countries drew 1-1 in all of their three group stage games and with nothing to separate them it had to come down to drawing of lots.

The draw took place in Mongomo on Wednesday and it was Guinea who would play in the quarter finals in the expense of Mali. It will be a tough one on Mali but its the rules of the game- sometimes it favours, sometimes not.

The excitement continues as we all now know our quarter finalist. Ivory Coast finished top of group D and Guinea will finish as runners up.

Our earlier article

Lots will be drawn to determine who goes through with the Ivory Coast in Group B on Thursday in Mongomo.

The lots will be drawn between Guinea and Mali as nothing could separate the two sides after round three of the group matches.

AFCON2015: Mali and Guinea have fate out of their hands

Guinea could not hold on to their lead as Modibo Maiga headed home a cross from Abdoulay Diaby to level the score. The 1-1 result meant both teams had drawn all three games with the same score line in the group stage.

Guinea went into the lead from the spot through Kevin Constant’s dinked effort. Mali could have immediately replied with a penalty of their own but Seydou Keita had his penalty saved.

As the game went on neither side were able to find the winning goal leaving both teams levelled on the standings.

Drawing the lots

The drawing of the lots will take place in the Confederation of African Football (Caf) hotel in Malobo at 15:00 GMT.

There will be two balls with each carrying the name of either Mali or Guinea. One of the balls will be picked by an official and the name in the chosen ball will be reviled- the name that is in there progresses as runner up in Group B. The selected team will face Ghana in the quarter finals.

Africa has seen drawing of lots in its history before with Algeria benefitting in the expense of Ivory Coast in 1988.
