FANTASY PROFILE: MATT ADAMS, 1B, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

LWOS Ranking 15, Captain’s Value $8.69

Matt Adams has sleeper potential as we head into 2015. While his Home Run total (17 to 15) regressed despite a substantial increase in playing time, he did demonstrate a high potential ceiling for power in the minor leagues, especially in 2011. The one question mark with his power at the MLB level is whether his 8.7% HR/FB rate is more reflective of his actual ability or the 21.8% HR/FB ratio that he had in 2013. Even if his HR/FB ratio improves by a little bit, Adams could easily hit 20+ HR.

The one element of his game that appears consistent is his batting average. In 2013 & 2014, Adams hit over .280 and there was very little fluctuation in his BABIP over the last two seasons.

While things generally look optimistic for Adams in the long term, one thing to keep a critical eye on is trends related to plate discipline. In 2014, his walk rate went from 7.2% to 4.6%.
