Athleticism: C-

More athletic than expected for a defensive tackle on the larger side. Flashes the ability to close well in a straight line with authority. Shows some body flexibility to maneuver and stay balanced through trash and contact. Possesses an average get off and a slow redirect. Will flail in an attempt to make sharp lateral movements.

Pass Rush: C+

Displays flashes of explosiveness and power to muster up a pass rush from the interior or on the outside. Possesses the baseline in pass rush moves and has a solid arm over and shoulder dip move. Best asset is his bulrush, but can mix in speed and moves. Is not explosive with any consistency, and relies mostly on his power to push the pocket. Will get his hands up into passing lanes, but generally does so a beat late and didn’t have much production in this area.

Run Defense: A

Is an extremely stout run defender with very good versatility. Can stack and shed, and plays both gaps on either side of him. Has a very good anchor and will not get moved off the ball one-on-one. Shows good ability to hold up versus the double team, as well, and is not easily washed out or turned and sealed. Is not always the first to make initial contact and does not always shed quickly enough to make the desired play. Rarely shows the ability to get through a gap and make plays in the backfield versus the run.

Technique: C+

Shows very heavy hands and shocks opposing blockers with his punch. Disengages well with his hands and is a heavy tackler. Doesn’t let ballcarriers slip through his arms and does a good job of getting runningbacks on the ground. Won’t make tackles in one-on-one situations in space due to his below average change of direction. Could stand to play with more hand activity and better use. Pad level is generally on the higher side and is exacerbated when he wears down.

Intangibles: A-

Has a very good motor considering his size and will neither back down from a challenge, nor cringe away from contact. Willing to put himself into the pile and pursues very well to get in on the action. Shows surprising range and hustle for a defensive tackle and doesn’t give up on a play unless it is well outside of his ability to catch up. Could stand to improve his diagnostic abilities, but shows solid gap discipline and responsibility on the field. A mature and hard-working player at a young age.

Red Flags: None

Bottom Line: While Malcolm Brown will never be mistaken for Gerald McCoy or Casey Hampton, he nevertheless has a very good career ahead of him as a versatile and effective contributor against the run and the pass. Brown is at his best occupying blocks up front and shedding to make plays in the hole, but is not to be overlooked rushing up the middle. Though most naturally suited as a one-technique, Brown could play as a three-technique or a base end in a 3-4 defense.

Comparison: Stephen Paea

Grade: 9.1 (1st Round)
