Mike Petke Fired as Coach of New York Red Bulls

Harrison, New Jersey (January 7th, 2015) – According to a report by Kristian Dyer on Metro.US, Mike Petke has been relieved of his duties as coach of New York Red Bulls. This news comes on the heels of the departure of assistant coach Robin Fraser. Fraser turned down a one year contract offer from RBNY, instead taking a similar role with Toronto FC.

The report revealed that the sacking came after a meeting yesterday afternoon between Petke and the club’s new sporting director, Ali Curtis.

Petke has had a relatively successful career as a bench boss so far. His team made the playoffs both seasons, getting one goal away from the MLS Cup Finals this past season. During his rookie campaign, his squad earned the Supporters Shield – the club’s first ever silverware.

Despite that, there are reasons to believe that Petke was mearly standing on the shoulders of those around him. And there was an all but confirmed assumption that his assistant Robin Fraser was, in fact, the man pulling the strings.

Petke endeared himself to the fans, always rememebering to acknowledge South Ward after nearly every match. He has served the Metrostars/Red Bulls organization loyally for years as a player, and now as a manager.

Update, the Red Bulls have confirmed the report via their official twitter account.
