A native of Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, the 6-3, 210 pound right-hander has pitched to a 23-13 record with a 3.37 ERA (98 ER, 262.0 IP) and 246 strikeouts against 81 walks in 60 games, 47 starts, in parts of three minor league seasons.

The 6-5, 190 pound right-hander owns a career 6-4 record with a 2.26 ERA and 160 strikeouts against 48 walks in 47 games, 44 starts, over parts of three minor league seasons.

Alvarez, 23, joined the Padres system on July 21 of last season in the trade that sent RHP Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels.
