Reports: Jason Spezza Extended by Stars

The former Ottawa Senators captain will have Dallas to call home for a few more years.

Going into a contract year last season, it was clear that Jason Spezza wanted a change of scenery. Senators general manager Bryan Murray honored his request, flipping him to the Stars for Alex Chiasson, two others, and a second-rounder in 2015 back in July.

Spezza finished last season with 23 goals and 66 points. This season, the 31-year-old Toronto native has been a bright spot in a slow start for the Stars, potting four goals and 18 points in 20 games.

The financial terms of the deal keep Spezza a well-paid player at a $7.5 million annual average cap hit, a subtle raise from his 7-year, $49 million deal he signed in 2008. The deal will kick in after this season, keeping Spezza in Dallas until he turns 35.

On a team that has multiple superstars in Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, Spezza will have some great talent surrounding him during his tenure.

Jason Spezza is one of many moves Stars general manager Jim Nill has made to turn the page quickly in Dallas, but it was unclear whether or not he would be in the long-term plans for the Big D’s future. Those questions were answered today.
