Joe Rogan: Coaching from the Commentating Booth?

Known for his color-commentary  for UFC events and was the host of the reality show Fear Factor, Joe Rogan is not afraid to speak his mind in whatever setting he is in.

At UFC 180, Joe Rogan was basically yelling from the stands when Mark Hunt was in Fabricio Werdum’s guard. As a jiu-jitsu practitioner, Rogan has a great knowledge of what Werdum has accomplished in grappling. “He needs to get out of there” is what Joe Rogan was nearly yelling while he was at the booth. This definitely is not the first time that Rogan has done this and there are other fighters that have mentioned that they have heard Rogan basically instruct them from the commentator booth.

Bobby Green was fighting Jacob Volkman at UFC 156 and it was clear that Rogan said to Green “Step over his leg” and then moments later said “Step over his right leg and you will get the mount.” It may seem to be rather biased for a commentator to do that type of thing, but Rogan claims that it is just second nature to instruct out loud when he sees the potential for advancement of position or for somebody to get out of danger. Rogan has never blatantly coached somebody while they were in the octagon, but has shown time and time again that he is almost instructing a fighter in a covert way.

Some fighters that Joe Rogan has been notably biased towards have been B.J. Penn, Jake Shields, Frankie Edgar, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin. With Machida, Rogan glorified Machida’s style as “elusive” rather than just simply running away from his opponent. Even though in many other fights Machida did the same thing and the crowd was booing him, Rogan had a way of justifying what Machida was doing no matter how boring the fight seemed to be.

A good thing about Rogan being so vocal is when Corey Hill fought Dale Hartt and Hill broke his own leg that was checked by Hartt, much like the Silva vs Weidman fight. Rogan yelled out “Stop the fight! Stop the fight!” so that Hill would not be hurt any more than he was at that moment in the fight. This shows that Rogan has sympathy for the fighters. Rogan is also quick to say “He’s out! He’s out!” when a fighter is either choked out by a submission or knocked out by strikes.

Regardless of his biased opinions or bizarre comments during fights, Rogan is the most popular fight commentator out there and his podcast is always growing in popularity with his exposure to the UFC and many different fight camps.
