Rapid Reaction: Iowa State defeats Georgia State

Iowa State finally did what they struggled to do in what seemed like every game in 2013, they got off to a great start, but as usual they carried it through the game. The score suggests that Georgia State isn’t your top tiered mid major team, however the Panthers are stacked with sharp shooters and transfers. Kevin Ware (Louisville,) Ryan Harrow (Kentucky,) and RJ Hunter (Georgia State’s Head Coach’s son, who is looked at as the best shooter in a non power-five conference.

Rapid Reaction: Iowa State defeats Georgia State

Dustin Hogue smashed an and-1 to open the game, awaking the crowd. What he showed was how explosive he can be, once leaping high enough that his knees were above a Georgia State players head. If this team wants a big run in the tournament this year, it’s going to come with Hogue down low, getting every rebound possible. Hogue had seven on Monday along with 15 points.

Naz Long opened the game with three 3 pointers missed, but overcame adversity and ended the game with five triples. Long is the Cyclones’ 3 point specialist, and whenever his shot goes in the air, the Hilton Coliseum crowd goes quiet with anticipation. Long ended his game with 17 points.

Iowa State is called “Transfer U” by many among those who live in the area, and UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones showed exactly why. BDJ showed off his dunking ability along with working some more passing into his game, which he lacked in the opener. Jones grabbed 15 points and seven assists.

In the end, the Cyclones beat an NCAA Tournament projected team by 23 points and showed how explosive they can be. Once again they put all five scores in double figures. However, It will be hard to see just how good the team really is until conference season, as their non-conference schedule is far away from the hardest schedule in the nation.
