McLaren United States Grand Prix Preview: Another Strong Weekend?

McLaren achieved by far their strongest result since the season-opener last time out at the Russian Grand Prix, with Jenson Button taking a strong fourth place and Kevin Magnussen fending off Fernando Alonso for fifth place after starting out of position. This was a massive result in a race which saw Force India pick just a single point. McLaren will be hoping for a similar performance at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, a track where McLaren has won of the races there.

McLaren United States Grand Prix Preview

No. 20 Kevin Magnussen (DEN) – 10th

Form: 12/10/10/14/5

Magnussen picked up a really good haul of points at Austin. It was a much-needed result for the young Dane who is clearly under pressure. He will enter this race with confidence, and although it is his first trip here, it does not necessarily mean that Magnussen will struggle. He will be looking to pick up more points and edge McLaren closer to that fifth place which the team is after. If both McLarens start picking up more serious points, they might even find themselves ahead of Ferrari before the end of the year.

No. 22 Jenson Button (GBR) – 7th

Form: 6/8/R/5/4

2013: Grid: P15, Race: P10

This is not necessarily a track where Button seems to go well at. He was very soundly beaten by Lewis Hamilton here in 2012 and also by Sergio Pérez here last year. That means he is yet to outqualify or outrace a team mate at Austin. He will be hoping to change that this time around as he looks to keep up his good form which has delivered 34 points and a retirement in five races. This weekend should be pretty interesting, especially with the imminent announcement of Fernando Alonso’s arrival next year.
