Red Devil's Advocate: Who is Best on the United Back Line?

By now, it is common knowledge that Manchester United are incredibly strong going forward however, are sorely missing the defence presence of players, like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić, that departed in the summer and failed to be replaced. It is quite clear that United have struggled, already conceding 14 goals, five more than at this stage last season (via Statto). After experimenting with various combinations of centre back this season, Louis van Gaal needs to establish a first choice pairing to gain some consistency with a run of crucial fixtures in the near future. But, statistically, who has been the best so far?*

Who is best on the Manchester United Back Line?

Jonny Evans At 26, Evans is the most senior centre back at United’s disposal. Despite his seniority, he has struggled to really cement his place in the team and prove his defensive abilities. He has made the most blocks this season, with an average of 1.33 per game. On the other hand, he has made the most defence errors this season and his unreliability has been a concern.

Phil Jones Phil Jones has been a key part of the United squad for the past few seasons due to his versatility. But the statistics show that he is their best centre back, with the most tackles won (3.33 per game), key passes (0.67 per game) and interceptions (5.67 per game). That being said, he has committed the most fouls with 1.33 per game. Overall, this shows that United could benefit from his return to fitness.

Chris Smalling Although his performances have not been remarkable this season, Smalling has been consistent and put in great effort for the team. It will be a boost for the squad when he is fit again, as he is very capable at centre back or can provide superb cover.

Marcos Rojo The only centre back United brought in during the transfer window appears to be settling in well with a few consistent and solid performances, he’s also won the most aerial duels, an average of 3.25 per game. After more time to adapt to the Premier League, one can see him becoming potentially one of United’s best centre backs.

Tyler Blackett Tyler Blackett has struggled so far this season. It was always going to be difficult for him to impress in his first senior season but, having played six games, the most of any of United’s centre backs, the statistics show he has suffered under the pressure. He has the worst stats and the lowest overall defensive score; he is also the only centre back to have been booked. With time he may improve, but currently, he is not a safe option.

Paddy McNair Paddy McNair had been United’s surprise of the season so far. At just 19 years old, McNair has been brought into the squad due to injuries, but he’s made the most of the opportunity. He put in a good performance against West Ham in his debut and a very solid display in arguably United’s most difficult game of the season against Everton. The stats also show this, with the most clearances, nine per match, and not a single foul committed in two games, he has certainly impressed. Despite his age, Paddy McNair has the potential to be an important player for the team.

Conclusively, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are United’s best centre backs on paper, but with persisting injury problems they have not yet played together, so once Phil Jones returns it will be interesting to see if they are given the opportunity. But currently, Rojo and McNair appear to be playing well together and the game time, for McNair, will be beneficial in the long run.

Despite this, it is also very clear that United need at least one strong defensive centre back to be signed in order to lead the team and strengthen the club’s weakest position.
