Breaking News: England Awarded Marquee Matches for Euro 2020

England have today been awarded the penultimate three games of Euro 2020, with Wembley Stadium named as the venue for both semi-finals, and the final itself.

In an unprecedented move to celebrate UEFA’s 60th year anniversary, the governing body have decided to host games from the tournament across a wide range of European cities, with Wembley pipping Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena to the post for the big three games.

Celebrations were not only limited to English shores today, though. Both Ireland and Scotland were awarded group games, and last sixteen clashes in what will be a hugely exciting format to the tournament, and something that, if successful, could well be repeated.

Most recently, Wembley Stadium has played host to both UEFA Champions League Finals in 2011 and 2013, but this will be the first international tournament action seen at the new Wembley Stadium, and indeed since Euro’96; the Three Lions reached the semi-finals at the old stadium before a heartbreaking defeat to old foe Germany on penalties.

A repeat of this huge disappointment will not be welcome for any English fans, but with the tournament not for another six years yet, the country has a little bit of time to make sure they get it right, and not only make the semi-finals, but win the tournament, at least!
