MLS 3.0 – How We Came to be MLS Fans

Not everyone inherits a team, as is the case amongst MLS fans. Our fathers didn’t grow up watching Toronto FC, and they haven’t had season tickets since the dawn of time to LA Galaxy.  We don’t remember our teams in the 70s and can’t recall “the good ole days”, though the 90s I suppose are getting to that stage.

So how is it that we became MLS fans?

LWOS took some time to pose the question to our followers on Twitter (@LastWordSC). The responses were overwhelming, both in number and in the very personal stories they told.

Here is how some of our followers came to be fans of Major League Soccer:

@Hoover_dam – Unemployed and living in a heavily Brazilian + Portuguese neighborhood, I have nothing better to do than turn on Univision at 3am and see what my neighbors are yelling about. I’m hooked. End of the summer I go to my first MLS game–And here my troubles began!

@DevinRigg – Went to my first game in 1996, then my college roommate turned me from casual follower to passionate fan

@ChoocherTrain – Henry came to nyrb in 2010

@MJ24ProRD – When David Beckham signed for the LA Galaxy, I noticed the hype here in Southern Cailifornia and I became a fan for LA. Almost 7 years later and after those 2 MLS cups, I am still a fan of my LA Galaxy and MLS.

@LastWordBigMick – I became a fan of the Metros in 96 because of . I hold him directly responsible. #RBNY #ForzaMetro

@LWOSEric – Always a fan of soccer and happy that a team was playing close to where i lived. #Metrostarsforever

@LWOSJonBava3 – Long story short, the 94 World Cup; went to a gm in Orlando, FL and wanted to support the league when it started 2 yrs later.

@EricWalcott – Been a fan of the league as long as I can remember. Became at Timbers fan first time I saw them on TV. Timber’s Army was rocking 90 minutes strong, fell in love w/supporters

@LWOSAlec – I got to go watch a soccer game live. What else did I need?! Oh yeah. 3 championships in 4 years. #VamosUnited

@BluesMan502 – became a soccer fan in Germany and became an MLS fan officially last November when @OrlandoCitySC became official #MLS21!!!!!

@futbolmonkey – never followed futbol until I bought FIFA07 as a gift and ended up keeping the game. Eventually wanted to watch live futbol.

@bgnewf – first live footy match I ever saw was 1985 Canada v Honduras qualifier that sent Canada to World Cup 86. #TFC sealed the deal

@SteveY8 – Father got season tickets to #cf97 on day 1 one of first 50 STH. Been going since I was 6 and I never gonna stop.

@LopezNumba11 – I’ve been watching the Timbers since the early 2000s it was easy following them to the road of MLS

@StuffSimon_Says – I was born in. Parents are Timbers supporters. Providence Park is like church for us. Match day is our holy day.

@ZacheryE96 – Canada finally got a team as Toronto FC and started following the league then.

@dawildfrontier – i was dragged unwillingly to a quakes game and it was love at first sight 🙂 loved the ultras and the atmosphere at buck shaw
