Giants Gameday Aftermath: Giants Blasted By Lions 35-14

Not a whole lot has been written about the Giants this season has been positive. Judging by what transpired in their season opener in Detroit, all of the negativity seems to be warranted and deserved. In fact, the Giants probably would be better served to change their name to “The Works-in-Progress”; not only was that the term of the night for announcer Mike Tirico, but it’s clear that the West Coast offense has not come off swimmingly for the offense. Try as we may, let’s try to examine what all went wrong.

Giants Gameday Aftermath: Giants Blasted By Lions 35-14

Pretty Much Everything Went Wrong: Unfortunately for the Giants, even with a new offensive scheme, the Giants looked much the same in terms of the offensive line being a sieve. Eli Manning (18/33/163 YDS/1TD/2 INTS) struggled mightily in the first game that counts under the new system. The Giants lack continuity and there were way too many mental mistakes offensively. It was pretty much by penalty charity that the Giants were actually hanging around in the first half and trailing by only a touchdown, but their luck ran out as the Lions defense stiffened and turned two Manning interceptions into points. So, same team.

Defense? What Defense?: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was given a five-year, $35 million deal to be the complement to Prince Amukamara. Tonight, however, he didn’t earn a cent. Mental breakdowns left and right; he turned both Calvin Johnson (which, c’mon, how can you lose him of all players?) and Golden Tate for long gains. Rodgers-Cromartie is on his fourth team; perhaps Giants fans saw exactly why he’s been shuffled around so much. For this kind of money, it certainly feels like he swindled Jerry Reese into a serious overpay. And it doesn’t appear to be getting much better, because…

Up Next: The Cardinals open up the home slate. Be prepared for 0-2. It’s easier to accept.
