South Carolina Schedule Preview: Some Talent is Extra Tough to Replace

After years stuck in the rut of 7-5 and forgettable bowl games, the Ol’ Ball Coach has regained some swagger from his days at The Swamp. Steve Spurrier rips off one-liners maybe one better than even Les Miles, but South Carolina is no joke. Three consecutive 11-win seasons in college football’s best conference are evidence of sustained success and founded more in sheer talent and solid fundamentals than gimmicks and gadget tricks. This program is on solid ground. That said, the current bar may be difficult to hit. Connor Shaw is getting no consideration in Cleveland Browns camp, but in the shadow of Manziel, McCarron and Murray, the Gamecocks all-time wins leader capped off a stellar career with a season for the ages (24 TD, INT). Shaw’s loss on offense is mirrored by the absence of the always imposing, if not always in playing position, Jadeveon Clowney. The NFL Draft’s first overall selection grabbed more attention, but the losses of Kelcy Quarles and Chaz Sutton up front will hurt nearly as much. Yes, the foundation is strong, but this year’s Gamecock edition may take a step back. MarkRogersTV runs down South Carolina’s 2014 schedule and the quest to win an elusive SEC Title.
