Ottawa Senators, Clarke MacArthur agree to a 5 year/$23.25M contract extension

It appears as though Clarke MacArthur will be remaining a member of the Ottawa Senators for the long term. The 29-year-old Lloydminster, Alberta native, signed a five-year contract extension worth $23.25 million with the Ottawa Senators. The contract carries an annual cap hit of $4.65 million, and pays MacArthur $4.5 million in the first two seasons and $4.75 million in the final three seasons.  The Senators announced the deal over the team’s official twitter account.

MacArthur, who played just his first and only season with Ottawa in 2013-14, netted 24 goals and 31 assists in 79 games. He was also set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the upcoming 2014-15 season.

“”Obviously we’re quite happy with what he did. He’s in that 20-to-25 goal range on a somewhat consistent basis and he’s a real complement to the young players who will end up playing at some point with him. Kyle Turris and him seemed to fit like a glove.” said general manager Bryan Murray.

Linemate Turris and MacArthur together totalled 50 goals and 113 assists last season on the eastern conference’s 11th place team.  With Jason Spezza gone the two players will be expected to anchor the Senators first line this season.

Clarke originally signed a two-year $6.5M contract with the Senators on July 5th, 2013.

In 8 NHL seasons, MacArthur has been a 20 goal scorer, and had at least 40 points three times.

The left winger, who was selected 74th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2003 NHL entry draft has total of 482 games played with Senators, Maple Leafs, Sabres, and Atlanta Thrashers scoring 117 goals and 268 assists.
