Today in MMA History August 15th Edition

This particular day in MMA history is a special one if you happen to be a Women’s MMA fan. Today marks the five year anniversary of the fight I like to refer to as: Beauty vs. The Beast, or Cyborg vs. Carano for you non-dramatic types. If you were a Carano fan it was a match that was pretty hard to watch as Gina put up a valiant effort early, but was simply outmatched by the hulking Cyborg. If you were a Cyborg fan it went about the way you expected. Regardless of who you rooted for, or even the out come for that matter, one thing most fans can agree upon is that this was the first bout in WMMA history that had that big fight feel. It also holds historical significance for being the first time a pair of women headlined a major MMA event. In the co-main event Gegard Mousasi scored a takedown on Renato “Babalu” Sobral in the first minute and quickly pounded him into unconsciousness.

Also on this day exactly ten years ago, Pride FC – Final Conflict 2004 took place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event was the culmination of the 2004 Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament, but instead of a winner the fans got a no contest in the finals between Fedor Emelianeko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira when an accidental headbutt opened a cut above Fedor’s eye. The bout was later rescheduled for December at Shockwave 2004 where Emelianeko won a unanimous decision over “Big Nog.” The co-main even of this one saw the “Axe Murder” Wanderlei Silva floored Yuki Kondo with a left hook in the middle of a wild brawl, Wandy then stomped out the defensless Kondo until the referee came to his rescue.
