Yankees land utilityman Martin Prado

The Bronx Bombers have struck again and this time they have made a big splash prior to today’s non-waiver trade deadline.   “Mr. Everything” Martin Prado will be in pinstripes after the Yankees send prospect Peter O’Brien to Arizona for compensation.

Martin Prado will likely start out in the outfield while the team also breaks in new guy Stephen Drew on the infield. Offensively, his bat is a welcome edition to a struggling Yankees lineup.  The Yankees currently sit third in the AL East and are chasing Toronto and Baltimore for the division and wild card spots.  Jack Curry of the YES Network broke the news.

Prado, 30, this season is batting .270/.317/.370 (91 OPS+) in 106 games for Arizona. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 107 across parts of nine major-league seasons. He’s signed through 2016 and is owed $11 million in each of the next two years.

O’Brien, meantime, is a career .266/.318/.533 hitter across three minor-league seasons. The 24-year-old O’Brien is currently playing in double-A.  He is a strong utility man as well capable of playing catcher, as well as the corner outfield and corner infield positions.  He has hit 33 home runs in 103 minor league games between single and double a in his career.

The Yankees have also given the Diamondbacks either a future player to be named later or cash considerations as part of this trade.

As part of the Yankees roster moves, they have designated Brian Roberts for assignment in order to make room for Prado and Stephen Drew.
