Yankees deal Kelly Johnson for Red Sox Stephen Drew

Another trade has made its way through the wire and this time from the two teams you would never expect to deal with one another.

The Red Sox have made their fourth move of the day sending short stop Stephen Drew to the enemy New York Yankees for journeyman IF/OF Kelly Johnson.

The deal is an obvious one for New York as they need to counter the loss of Derek Jeter at the end of the season. The team also recently dealt a promising young player away in Yangervis Solarte. Drew also fills in the gap left behind from that trade.

The Red Sox, who look like they’re attempting to make a deal with every Major League team before all is said and done, receive Kelly Johnson for bench depth and his veteran presence.

Stephen Drew, 31, is having a rough time of things this year hitting just .176/.255/.328 with 4 home runs and 11 RBI in 39 games for the Red Sox. Drew was a free agent who re-signed with the Sox after the season had started. Last year he hit .253/.333/.443 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI in helping the Sox to win the World Series.

Kelly Johnson, 32, is hitting .219/.304/.373 with 6 home runs and 22 RBI so far for the Yankees this season.  He has split time between second base and third base.  Johnson has also spent some time in left field.

The Red Sox earlier moves saw Jon Lester go to Oakland, Andrew Miller to Baltimore, and John Lackey to St. Louis.
