NFL’s Believe It or Not: Dee Milliner, Joe Thomas, and Calvin Pace

Welcome back to “NFL’s Believe It or Not.” This week, I will focus on controversial comments from Dee Milliner, Joe Thomas, and Calvin Pace.

Dee Milliner

I will start with New York Jets cornerback Dee Milliner, who said, “The best corner in the league? Me. I ain’t gonna say that somebody else is better than me.” Dee Milliner struggled in his rookie season, so it might be difficult to classify him as the best cornerback in the league when he wasn’t even a good cornerback last year. At least the Patrick Peterson and Richard Sherman trash talk on Twitter is interesting. This is simply a moronic statement and the rest of the league can’t help but laugh. Milliner isn’t even close to the best cornerback in his division, who just happens to be Darrelle Revis. Milliner must improve tremendously during the course of this season if he wants to even be considered a good cornerback. Perhaps he never watched any of his game tape last season. This statement might enhance his likeability though, because I’m sure Rex Ryan approves.

Joe Thomas

Next up, Cleveland Browns left tackle Joe Thomas decided to add to the list of ridiculous offseason comparisons, saying that Brian Hoyer is “a lot like Tom Brady.” “When you look at the way he competes and the way he demands the most out of everybody around him, it’s no coincidence that those guys played together.” I wonder how many times Joe Thomas has watched Tom Brady play. Brian Hoyer might turn into a solid quarterback for the Browns this year, but there is a reason they drafted Johnny Manziel. This is certainly high praise for a quarterback that hasn’t really done anything in his professional career so far. Joe Thomas is certainly allowed to admire his teammate, but he probably shouldn’t disrespect one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL while he admires him.

Calvin Pace

Finally, New York Jets pass rusher Calvin Pace joined his teammate Dee Milliner with another questionable statement, saying, “Compared to the rest of the defenses in the NFL? Man, we’re the best. You ask anybody around the league, we’re not the team you want to see coming in, even in a down year.” The Jets are definitely a good defense, but this is a stretch. I’m sure a few teams from the NFC West, possibly even the entire division, have something to say about this. The Jets have a few questions in the secondary, but if Dee Milliner turns into the best cornerback in the league this year, they should be fine. On a more serious note, the Jets did add safety Calvin Pryor in the draft, but the rest of the secondary is definitely questionable. Their defensive line is very good, but their secondary will probably hold them back. The Jets could sneak into the top 5 this year, but ultimately the top spot is a big reach. The chemistry on this defense certainly looks fantastic though, as Rex Ryan, Dee Milliner, and Calvin Pace all love to brag during the offseason.
