Fantasy Tight End Rankings

#5 Jordan Cameron

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 22 Cle 8 6 33 0 13 0 0
2012 23 Cle 14 20 226 1 40 0 0
2013 24 Cle 15 80 917 7 118 1 0

Jordan Cameron was a top 5 tight end last year, but it was a roller coaster of a ride to get there. The up and down games drove most owners crazy. When he was on an up Cameron was well worth it. A lot of people are nervous of the new coaching regime taking over however, they cannot change how athletic and big Jordan Cameron is. He will be used in any offense and especially in one that just lost its number one target in Josh Gordon. Expect him to end up right back battling for a top 5 finish again. You can expect numbers approaching those he posted last year.

#4 Vernon Davis

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 27 SF 16 67 792 6 95 3 1
2012 28 SF 16 41 548 5 61 0 0
2013 29 SF 15 52 850 13 84 1 1

What a year Vernon Davis had! He helped many of teams last year as his production was near the top of all TEs. The question is will the 49ers find a way to get him the ball as often as last year. If they have all their weapons, which they did not last year, it will be hard to find enough to go around in this run heavy offense. The other side of the coin is that more weapons mean less double teams for Davis.  Then you add in the hope that Kaepernick will improve his passing game and that will allow Harbaugh to open up the offense.  Vernon has been a match ups nightmare for defenses since he entered the league.  His production however has been less than consistent. I like Vernon Davis, but fear that he will go too high for him to be a value on draft day.

#3 Rob Gronkowski

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 22 NE 16 90 1327 17 124 0 0
2012 23 NE 11 55 790 11 80 1 1
2013 24 NE 7 39 592 4 66 0 0

Ever since 2010, the season Rob Gronkowski began his NFL career, he has been one of the most dominating tight ends the NFL. He most notably in 2011, set the NFL single-season record for receiving touchdowns by a tight end with 17 and in doing so became the first tight end in history to lead the league in touchdowns. Gronkowski has the size at 6’6 265lbs, as well as the ability to be a sure handed reliable target when thrown too, a dangerous route runner, and a physical daunting tight end to cover. He is also very hard to bring down after he catches the ball due to his immense size which is the reason a decent amount of his yards come after the catch. Gronkowski also benefits from the fact that Tom Brady constantly targets the big man when he’s on the field, which poses a real problem for the opposing team’s defenses too stop him.  However with that being said, Rob Gronkowski finished the 2013 season with only 39 receptions for 592 yards and four touchdowns, which was a down season for the superstar because of the numerous injuries he suffered during these past two seasons. Gronkowski last season had numerous offseason surgeries for the back pain and the forearm fracture, which forced the tight end to miss the first six games of 2013. Also he endured a strained hamstring when he was actually on the field last season. Then a torn ACL and MCL in Week 14 ended his season. These injuries would of course pose the question how durable is he? The answer to that question is good news for all fantasy football owners and New England Patriots fans because Gronkowski remains on track to be ready for the start of the season, despite only playing in seven games last season. When he was on the field, he averaged 9.6 targets per game last season, and quarterback Tom Brady will continue to look his way often this year. There’s no denying that when Healthy Rob Gronkowski is one of the best tight ends in the game and will look to come back stronger than ever.

#2 Julius Thomas

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 23 Den 5 1 5 0 7 0 0
2012 24 Den 4 0 0 0 0 0 0
2013 25 Den 14 65 788 12 90 0 0

Thomas was the breakout TE star of the 2013 fantasy season. After two years in Denver derailed by inexperience and injury, last season was a revelation. Thomas’ 9.0 points per game were good enough for the #3 ranking for the season, although he missed two games midseason due to injury, and tailed off in production toward the end of the year. Greatest strength: he is a coverage matchup nightmare waiting to happen, somewhere between Gronk and Graham from a size and speed standpoint. Biggest weakness: Peyton is only allowed to use one ball per play, and there are tons of other options in the Broncos passing game.

#1 Jimmy Graham

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 24 NO 16 99 1310 11 149 1 1
2012 25 NO 15 85 982 9 135 1 0
2013 26 NO 16 86 1215 16 143 0 0

There are few words which can describe how dominant Jimmy Graham has been over the past few years. Last season, only 10 tight ends had more touchdowns than Graham had games with two TDs. Even if Graham had only played the first five weeks, he would have still had the 14th most receiving yards at his position. And with no significant changes to suggest Graham will see a dip in production (especially after he signed a new $40 million contract), Graham should finish 2014 with around 200 fantasy points again. The biggest question surrounding him is whether he should be taken in round one or two. If that’s the only question you have, then you know you’re looking at a stud.
