Tottenham Talkline: Building a bright squad for the new season

Tottenham Hotspur had been the least busiest team in the Premier League before they announced the double signing of Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City, with Gylfi Sigurdsson going the other way in the deal. However, the club might not be done yet as there is still time left in this transfer window.

Ben Davies was first spotted in one of Tottenham’s training videos, which was promptly taken down although many Spurs fans had seen it. This served as a photo confirmation that the deal with Swansea had been completed. But, the deal was not officially announced until a few days later. Davies is a solid signing. He will play in the left back position, a position that many fans agree is weak. Danny Rose is young, like Davies, but has inconsistent form. It’s good to have two players that play in every position and so they can rotate. By having two out and out left backs, rather than Jan Vertonghen filling in or Kyle Naughton, it makes for a strong left side. It will also allow for greater width too.

Michel Vorm is just another top keeper that Spurs now have within their ranks. He will serve as a good back up to Hugo Lloris, and will allow Brad Friedel to take a backseat and perhaps take up more of a coaching role. Vorm, with the nickname of ‘Penalty killer’ down to his reputation for his penalty saving ability, is only 30, with plenty of time left to play in his career, but also with enough experience to keep the Tottenham goal safe. So far he has made 15 international appearances for the Netherlands and this is proof alone that he’s good enough to be the new second keeper.

The departure of Gylfi Sigurdsson was a transfer that was not entirely surprising. He has scored some good goals in his career at Tottenham, especially the goal against Hull. Although he hasn’t proved to be as good a player as he first looked in his debut Premier League season. This is perhaps due to the Icelandic midfielder not seeing as much 1st- team action at White Hart Lane. Arguably, other players available have simply been better than him during his time at the club. It’s a player that the fans won’t be too sorry to see go as there are many similar midfielders who are above him in the pecking order.

The window is not closed yet. There have been rumours, as there always are, about certain other players joining the club before the window closes. Griezmann is a name on many fans lips as a must have player this summer. He had a good World Cup run and looks like a quality player. His crossing and dribbling ability could be what Tottenham need to supply the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor or Roberto Soldado with plenty of chances in front of goal. Is this a likely transfer when Erik Lamela is likely to step up next season? Both Lamela and Griezmann could play on opposite wings of course, but Lamela may just be enough to provide class on the wings. Andros Townsend is a solid winger and doesn’t need replacing.

The all important left back position has been filled with a quality signing. Tottenham fans will be hoping that if there are any new signings, they will be good ones. Good signings that can push the team forward to glory and achieving something next season.
