CFL Predictions – Week 5

The LWOS CFL writers are back to predict the Week 5 outcomes. Again the week kicks off with a clash between two unbeaten teams.

CFL Predictions – Week 5

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos

Matt: The clash of the remaining unbeaten teams is the matchup of the week. Edmonton wiped out Winnipeg at IG in Week 4, and Calgary barely squeaked out a win at home to Hamilton. It’s dangerous to take one week’s results as gospel, but Edmonton just looks like the better team right now.

Nick: Another powerful opponent for Edmonton after beating former undefeated team Winnipeg 26-3 last week, they should go 5-0 at home this week.

Lance: It should be the game of the week, with the two unbeatens left dueling for Western supremacy. Last week Edmonton showed what good team defence is, by not allowing any Winnipeg momentum. Calgary won ugly, but in the end all that matters is getting the job done. Expect a tight game.

Matthew Bin: Calgary 13 – Edmonton 25

Nick di Giovanni: Calgary 11 – Edmonton 21

Lance Keiser: Calgary 26 – Edmonton 22

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Lions

Matt: Winnipeg bombed last week, and B.C. looked invincible at home. It’s hard to find a reason to think Winnipeg will look better than last week, or that B.C. will look worse. Not getting blown out is the best the Bombers can hope for.

Nick: After putting up 41 points on the board against Montreal, the Lions look to pounce on  down Bombers team who put up 3 against Edmonton. It will be close but Lions on top.

Lance: Last week, the Lions showed us what they can do at home against the disappointing Alouettes. The question is whether they can do this against an organized team that is coming off their own home field embarrassment. I expect to see more of a Kevin Glenn revival but Winnipeg is coming to play.

Matthew Bin: Winnipeg 7 – B.C. 22

Nick di Giovanni: Winnipeg 27 – B.C. 31

Lance Keiser: Winnipeg 27 – B.C. 35

Ottawa Redblacks at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Matt: The Ticats remain homeless, with this game taking place at tiny Ron Joyce field at McMaster. Ottawa isn’t a great team but they pulled out an unlikely win last week, and they’re starting to cohere as a unit. Hamilton did have a strong winning record at their itinerant home last year, but this ain’t Guelph. Ottawa’s going to ruin the homecoming party, unfortunately.

Nick: Congratulations to the Redblacks for first ever win last week, they look to win two straight against a Hamilton team who looks like they don’t know what they’re doing.

Lance: The party is over. The Redblacks got the job done at home last week, but the may have a bit of a hangover. Meanwhile Hamilton was strong at times against Calgary. Expect Hamilton to have their first win of the year.

Matthew Bin: Ottawa 20 – Hamilton 14

Nick di Giovanni: Ottawa 19 – Hamilton 7

Lance Keiser: Ottawa 23 – Hamilton 28

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders

Matt: Saskatchewan is coming off a bye week after two humiliating losses. If they’re not ready for this game, they might as well write the whole season off. Toronto has had problems of their own, with an injured Chad Owens and two straight losses of their own. Expect Saskatchewan to take this handily.

Nick: Host Roughriders, coming off their bye week, would like to serve up some revenge from a 45-18 loss against the Argonauts 3 weeks ago and they definitely should. The Argos haven’t won since that game and will continue losing after this week.

Lance: It’s a week 2 rematch of the 48-15 beat down the Argos gave the Riders. But Saskatchewan is coming off a bye that would have featured a lot of ball protection practice. Expect a two-back system with Will Ford and Anthony Allen. The Argos just couldn’t hang on to spoil Ottawa’s party last week, and now they enter even more hostile territory.

Matthew Bin: Toronto 10 – Saskatchewan 30

Nick di Giovanni: Toronto 19 – Saskatchewan 32

Lance Keiser: Toronto 25 – Saskatchewan 33

Week 4 Notes

The undisputed winners of the Week 4 predictions were Lance and, ahem, yours truly, both of us with a perfect 4-0 on the week. Nick went 2-2 and commenter salty1264 had another unfortunate showing with a 1-3 record again. No one even came close to predicting the scores or the spread on any of the games, but who expected the Ticats to keep it within a field goal, or the Bombers and Als to get blown off the field? No one, that’s who. Welcome to the CFL.

Remember to add your picks in the comments. The LWOS CFL writers can’t possibly predict the scores better than you, can they?
