RBNY Dispatch: More Red Bull Problems

The Dynamo haven’t had the most amazing season so far, but neither has RBNY. Things didn’t get any better for the Red Bulls when they got off to a rocky start within the first minute when Giles Barnes scored a fantastic header for the Dynamo, giving them a very, very early lead. RBNY were back in the game when Bradley Wright-Phillips capitalized on a rather scrappy chance and slotted past Tally Hall nicely. Throughout the match, RBNY put some good shots on goal, but Hall or the post stopped them in their tracks. In the 72nd minute of play, Wright-Phillips made a fantastic bloop of a header, giving RBNY the lead. However, a handball in the 82nd minute of play caused the Dynamo to earn a penalty kick, and who else but US National Team member Brad Davis converted it to tie the match. It ended a stalemate with a lot of debate. The referee call was very controversial as a lot of arguments could be made for the call and against it. RBNY could’ve had three points instead of just one. RBNY had 5 shots on goal while the Dynamo had a good 4. The Dynamo put 50% of those shots into the back of the net, while RBNY only had 40% in the back of the net.

More Red Bull Problems

The sluggish start at the beginning of the match did not do them any good at all. This is a constant problem with the club. RBNY tend to follow two avenues at the start of every match. They either do well in the start, or they get off to an absolutely rocky start. This needs to be fixed. The goal the Dynamo had was fantastic, but RBNY has to stop conceding so early on. Overall, both teams pretty much had an equal performance, but it could eventually prove to be a crucial blow. RBNY needs every single point possible in order to stay alive in this playoff hunt. Columbus has been battling RBNY the entire season for the 5th and final spot. In fact, the two are meeting on the 12th of July at Red Bull arena for a fixture. On the bright side, Roy Miller is coming back, and Tim Cahill should be starting next match, which will provide a much needed boost to the Red Bulls.

The problem lies within multiple areas. The back line is filled with young but raw talent who make “rookie” mistakes. The midfield doesn’t offer enough passing support for Wright-Phillips or Thierry Henry. This could change as a trade could be done to get a supporting midfielder, or RBNY could possibly picking up a released player from a European club. A choice that could help the midfield out tremendously could be Georgios Karagounis of Greece. He can create chances, be a factor off set-pieces, and provide stability along with experience. Changes need to be made in order to solidify a playoff spot.
