Jonas Hiller Signs Contract with Calgary Flames

Unrestricted free agent goaltender Jonas Hiller has signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Calgary Flames. The 32-year-old had previously spent his entire NHL career with the Anaheim Ducks before they elected not to offer him a contract extension this summer. Last season, Hiller finished with a combined record of 29-13-7 in 50 appearances for the Ducks. Additionally, he sported a .911 save percentage, a 2.48 goals against average, and recorded five shutouts.

The Switzerland native appeared in only six of the Ducks’ 13 playoff games during the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Ultimately, fellow net-minders Frederik Andersen and John Gibson managed to surpass him as the team’s go-to-tandem which signaled the end for Hiller in Anaheim. For the Flames, Hiller provides a clear sense of stability in net as he’s proven himself to be capable of being a No. 1 starter night in and night out.

For Hiller, this is a prime opportunity to hit the refresh button and become the undisputed man between the pipes once again. It’s safe to say he will be looking to make an immediate impact from the very first game he steps into the blue paint. In 326 games throughout his seven-year career in the league, Hiller is 162-110-32 with a .916 save percentage, a 2.51 goals against average, and 21 shutouts.
