Jarome Iginla signs deal with the Colorado Avalanche

Jarome Iginla and the Colorado Avalanche have agreed on a three year contract worth $5.3M per season ($5.5, $5.5, $5.0). Iginla, who previously played for the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames was a big-time player in the Bruins Stanley Cup run during last year’s post-season.

Speculation started rather quickly of where Jarome Iginla would end up once it was revealed that the NHL’s updated salary cap put the Boston Bruins in a world of trouble. Unable to fit Iginla under their cap, the guessing game started on where the former Calgary Flames captain would find himself next. Alas, after all the talk, Iginla chose Denver.

At the age of 37, Iginla showed that some players age like a fine wine when he put up yet another 30-goal campaign, his 8th of his career. He also managed to score 5 goals in 12 playoff games that year, aiding his team to a second round confrontation against the Montreal Canadiens, coming up just short, losing in game seven.

In 17 seasons, Iginla has played a career total 1,310 games, recording 1,167 points (560 goals, 607 assists) while gathering 887 penalty minutes. In 80 career post-season games, Iginla has record 67 points (31 goals, 36 assists) with his most notable run being with the 2004 Calgary Flames, where Iginla scored 13 goals and added 9 assists in 26 games before falling short in the Stanley Cup finals to the Tampa Bay Lightning. To add to his success, Iginla has five gold medals in International play, including two Winter Olympic gold medals, one in 2002 and the other in 2010.

There doesn’t seem to be much slowing down Jarome, as he continues to play at full force. The Avalanchewon’t be disappointed when they place him into their top 6, as Iginla has proved he can still produce at a high level. At the same time, he is the perfect leader-type guy and adds a ton of experience and depth to the line-up.
