Lack of Cyclones brings Breakout Games

Iowa State Cyclones players were absent from the first two games of the YMCA Capital City League on Sunday, but that didn’t stop the other college athletes from performing to their bests.  Read about each game below, and visit the YCCL twitter (@ycapcity) for the box scores.  Also, you can follow me on twitter (@cfchangs9) for in game updates.

Game 1: ADIO Chiropractic (2-2) 125, Phoenix Renewable Resources (2-2) 112

Team ADIO started out 0-2 but has battled back to a 2-2 record and moved up to fourth in League Standings.  With a win over Phoenix on Sunday, the team was finally starting to show some progress. ADIO has been without Matt Thomas (ADIO-Iowa State So.) and Monte Morris (ADIO-Iowa State So. *both are set to return on Wednesday) but it didn’t make a big difference in the last two games.

Kale Abrahamson (ADIO-Drake So.) lead his team again with 34 points on Sunday Night.   Abrahamson put in the winning basket last weekend for ADIO and was a heavy contributor near the end of this game.

Game 2: Walnut Creek YMCA (3-1) 117, Capital Orthopedics (2-2) 113

Capital Orthopedics was on a roll this season starting out 2-0 and challenging undefeated, at the time, Renaissance Granite to an Overtime game last week.  However, without Clayton Custer (CAPO-Iowa State Fr.) and Abdel Nader (CAPO-Iowa State Jr.), the team looked lost.

Although, Reed Timmer (YMCA-Drake Fr.) had another 20+ point game (played 3, scored 20+ all 3 times) with 38 points and 8 rebounds to lead his team to the win.   The Drake newcomer has turned many heads this season as he goes into Drake as a Freshman in 2014.

Game 3: Coca Cola Atlantic Bottling (1-3) 121, Renaissance Granite (3-1) 115

The first game of three that Iowa State players had shown up to, but only one per team.  Kourtlin Jackson (RG-Iowa State So.) lead his team with 38 points trying to keep the undefeated season alive, but his big game wasn’t enough to move Renaissance Granite to a 4-0 record.

Sherron Dorsey-Walker (CCBC-Iowa State So.) helped prevent that cause with a 44 point, 12 rebound double-double.   SDW put up monster numbers last season and saw some court time for the Cyclones, but his numbers are doing nothing, but increasing.

What’s Next: Sunday, June 22 Game Schedule *all times CST

5:30pm: ADIO (2-2) vs. Renaissance Granite (3-1)
6:45pm: Coca Cola (1-3) vs. YMCA (3-1)
8:00pm: Phoenix RR (2-2) vs. Capital Ortho (2-2)

What to watch for

G1: Streaking ADIO looks to give Renaissance Granite a second straight loss

G2: Coca Cola came off their first win of the season and look to grab another upset

G3: Phoenix and Capital Ortho will have a crucial game on Wednesday as it will tie break the standings into two groups.
