Yankees Pitcher Michael Pineda ejected for pine tar on neck.

Surprisingly just 13 days after Michael Pineda was clearly pitching with a substance on his pitching hand during a game against the Red Sox, the New York Yankees pitcher was ejected from his Wednesday night start against the same Boston Red Sox after umpires found a foreign substance that appeared to be pine tar all over the pitchers neck.

With two outs and no runners on during the second inning of Wednesday night’s game, Red Sox manager John Farrell left his dugout to talk with home plate umpire Gerry Davis. Davis and his crew went to the mound and touched the ride side of Pineda’s neck and promptly ejected him from the game after getting a finger full of the substance on his index finger.

Before the game started, Red Sox manager John Farrell said “I would expect that if it’s used, it’s more discreet than last time.” That was clearly not the case in the game tonight. Michael Pineda will now be subject to a 10-game suspension from Major League Baseball and his repeated use of pine tar while on the mound will certainly be the talk of the baseball world over the next few days.

With Pineda out of the game the Red Sox went on to defeat the Yankees 5-1.

“He made an error in judgment, and he’ll admit to that,” Yankess manager Joe Girardi said after the game.

Pineda admitted the substance was pine tar and said: “I apologize to my team and everybody. I learn from this mistake, and this won’t happen again.”

“We’re all embarrassed,” General Manager Brian Cashman said, adding, “that never should have happened.”
