Josh Hamilton likely to have thumb surgery and miss 6-8 weeks

Angels slugger Josh Hamilton will miss the next 6-8 weeks after it was revealed today that he would need surgery on his injured left thumb. Hamilton suffered the injury Tuesday on a head-first slide into first base.

Hamilton said. “The news sucks. Any time you’re playing hard and having fun, last thing you want to do is miss time and hurt the team.”

Hamilton has been diagnosed with a tear of the UCL ligament and a torn capsule in his left thumb. Josh Hamilton has been on fire to start the 2014 season as he has slashed his way to a .444/.554/.741 start with two home runs, and looked primed to make another run at the American League MVP this season.  Its a big change from last year, when Hamilton had just a .548 OPS last April.

The Angels have called up outfielder J.B. Shuck from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Hamilton’s place on the 25-man major league roster.  Hamilton has been placed on the disabled list.

Update: Hamilton will go for a second opinion before undergoing surgery.
