Liverpool Look For One of Most Remarkable Premier League Seasons Ever

I don’t think anyone could have imagined that Liverpool would still be in with a shout of their first ever Premier League title going into the last seven games of the season. In fact I’m still trying to get my head around how this team, which finished in 7th place last season are now mounting an assault on the title.

To put this into perspective this is a team whose last Champions League campaign was back in the 2009/ 2010 season and since then have never even looked like getting into the top 4 let alone getting anywhere near a title. The manager’s in that period from then until now have been borderline disastrous bringing in players like Joe Cole, Stewart Downing and Paul Konchesky not to mention the amount of money wasted on flops like Carroll, Downing and Adam which could’ve put the club into financial crisis. Losing great and influential players like Alonso, Mascherano and Torres also came as a blow to Liverpool and maybe started to put doubt into the minds of players like Steven Gerrard who might have begun to wonder if he’d ever win the Premier League.

Then along comes Brendan Rodgers with his ridiculous “Being Liverpool” TV series leaving people in shock with former Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson criticising the programme claiming that Anfield bosses of old would be “turning in their graves”

Brendan Rodgers first season was also far from smooth, trying to put into practise his philosophy was going to take time and Liverpool almost used last season (2012/2013) as a training season to try and drill into the team his style of play, Bans and controversy surrounding their talisman almost dismantled this however after overcoming that and forcing Suarez to stay. Liverpool started the season with a glimmer of hope and an outside chance of finishing in the top four.

Looking at Liverpool’s squad I sometimes wonder how players such as Flanagan, Henderson, Sturridge and Lucas are even playing in the Premier League let alone playing for Liverpool. So why have Liverpool been so successful this season? To be honest I still don’t know. Is it because Suarez is the best player in the world? Is it because Brendan Rodgers is one of the best managers in the world?  All I know is that if Liverpool manage to win the league this season it will be one of the greatest achievements in Premier League history and possibly one of the great mysteries in football.
