Sad news out of Buffalo as Jim Kelly needs surgery to deal with a return of his oral cancer. Jim Kelly’s wife Jill Kelly indicates that the cancer is aggressive and has begun to spread.
The 54-year-old former Buffalo Bills star, and Pro Football Hall of Famer is being treated in New York City. His brother Dan Kelly states that the surgery could be performed as early as Thursday, or could be delayed until April 1st.
Kelly’s Buffalo based doctors said that the return of the cancer was discovered when he came for follow-up tests after surgery to remove cancerous cells last year. Last year’s surgery was successful in removing all traces of cancerous cells at the time.
“Jim Kelly came to ECMC this week for continued testing related to his oral surgery,” Dr. Thom Loree, a head and neck surgeon, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, it has been determined that his cancer has returned. Our team of head and neck cancer specialists is determining a course of treatment that will allow Mr. Kelly to battle this cancer successfully. Mr. Kelly has asked that you to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
