Athleticism: B+

Moves surprisingly well, especially when considering his size. Flexible, agile, and quick-hipped. Moves better going forward than he does laterally or in reverse. Excellent burst to close downhill on plays in front of him. Has good, not great range, and is good in pursuit.

Power: C+

Fairly good run defender on the outside and can shoot into the backfield. Movement skills allow him to avoid blocks, but is not your typical run and chase linebacker. Has more length than strength when taking on blocks, but can uncoil and play with pop. Very active with his hands to get off blocks and plays with the leverage and leg drive to anchor and to push the pocket.

Technique: C+

Has good length and reach to gran the ballcarrier, but lacks much power as a tackler. More of a drag down type than a striker. Is better making tackles behind the line with a head of steam, than making the one-on-one tackle in space. Hesitates on shoulder moves and needs to just commit and strike his target.

Third-Down: A-

Rare combination of ability to drop into coverage as well as the rush the passer. Is not a master of either but is equally impressive in both. Extremely fluid mover and cover backs in the flat with ease. Has a very good coverage range in zone. Far more experience as a pass rusher than a cover linebacker and still has potential to improve in coverage. Accelerates when he has a lane to the QB and rarely misses his chance to lay on a hit. Has an effective arsenal of moves, including a spin, arm over, and swim move.

Intangibles: B-

Adequate instincts and effort. Needs more of an edge as a run defender, and plays too tentatively at times. Excellent producer with plenty of experience on the field. Had some run ins with the law as a high school athlete but has stayed out of trouble since then. Will turn 24 before his rookie season begins.

Red Flags: None

Bottom Line: Van Noy’s unique blend of coverage and pass rushing ability puts him into the Von Miller/Sio Moore category of linebacker who can play a role as a threat in a 43 defense. While he lacks the power and pure explosiveness of a 34 rush linebacker, Van Noy can be a stand up blitzer in a 43, with the coverage ability to be a three down difference maker.

Comparison: Sio Moore

Grade: 8.7 (2nd Round)
