Matt Moulson Traded to Minnesota

The Buffalo Sabres have made another move, trading left wing Matt Moulson and centre Cody McCormick to the Minnesota Wild. In return the Sabres will get forward Torrey Mitchell, a second-round selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft (previously acquired from Winnipeg) and a second-round selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

The 26-year-old Moulson was part of the Thomas Vanek deal between the Sabres and Islanders earlier this season.  He is scheduled to become a free agent on July 1st and so with the Sabres heavily rebuilding they have flipped him for yet more future assets.

Moulson had 11 goals, 18 assists and 29 points in 44 games with the Sabres this year.  Overall he has 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 points in 55 games in 2013-14.  He was a two-time thirty goal scorer for the New York Islanders, playing a key role on left wing of their top line with John Tavares.

Moulson has played parts of seven seasons in the NHL, with the Los Angeles Kings, Islanders, and Sabres.  In 377 career games he has 135 goals, and 127 assists for 262 career points.

The 30-year-old McCormick has one goal and four assists for five points in 29 games with the Sabres this season.  He is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old Mitchell has one goal and eight assists for nine points in 58 games with the Wild this season.  Mitchell is signed for next season with a $2.5 million salary and $1.9 million cap hit.

The move is yet another transaction by the Sabres who have had a turbulent week, to say the least with the trading of franchise goalie Ryan Miller, captain Steve Ott, and the abrupt resignation of president Pat Lafontaine.
