Report: Oilers Sign Ben Scrivens to a Two-Year Contract Extension

Breaking news from TSN’s Aaron Ward, that the Edmonton Oilers have signed goalie Ben Scrivens to a Two-Year Contract Extension, believed worth $4.6 million ($2.3 million AAV).

Scrivens was acquired by the Oilers in a trade from the Los Angeles Kings earlier this season. He has familiarity with coach Dallas Eakins as he was the starter for the Toronto Marlies when they went to the 2012 Calder Cup Finals under Eakins.

Scrivens was also involved in the off-season trade that saw Jonathan Bernier go to the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He would only spend about half a season in Los Angeles before the emergence of Martin Jones saw the Kings stuck with a glut of goalies, and he was moved to Edmonton in January.

The 27-year-old Scrivens put up 59 saves in a shutout of the San Jose Sharks on January 29th, 2014 to set the NHL record for most saves during a shutout in a regular season game.

He has put up a 10-9-4 record in 26 appearances this season, split between Los Angeles and Edmonton. He also has a .934 save percentage and 2.02 Goals Against Average.

With the low cap hit, this move does not necessarily mean that the Oilers have appointed Scrivens as the starting goalie going into next year. There is still room to add another goalie in a 1a/1b type situation, or even add a top level starter and have Scrivens as the backup.

Scrivens could have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1st if he had not signed a contract extension with Edmonton.  The Oilers also have Ilya Bryzgalov who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
