Athleticism: D

Below average athlete. Lacks much range or change of direction skills. Rarely leaves the tackle box. Struggles to get to the sideline before the play is already behind. Lacks footspeed. Shows very good closing burst and accelerates well in a straight line.

Power: B+

Does not exhibit the type of power you would expect given his frame, and could stand to increase his functional strength. Can rock a blocker back on contact, but does not do much afterwards. Lacks second effort to disengage. Closes fast and can stonewall ballcarriers. Plays physical and is not afraid to get his nose dirty and mix it up inside.

Technique: C+

Lacks much in the way of hand usage. Simply locks on to his man and does work enough to shed. Seems to have trouble finding the ballcarrier which leads to missed tackles and overrunning the play. Too many of his tackles came from behind. Made very few square up tackles during film study and rarely got the chance to showcase his striking ability.

Third-Down: D

Can explode downhill and shoot gaps on a blitz, but does not have the foot speed to seal the deal regularly. Has been used on the edge. Is a liability in coverage. Cannot cover running backs and routinely gets burned in man. Does not have much range in zone either. Has a chance if he can get his hands on a receiver and can jam his man.

Intangibles: C+

Is not the quickest reactor. Will get baited into doing what the offense wants him to. Showed some negative body language on the field. Three year starter and excellent producer at the non-AQ level. Served a one game suspension his senior year for a violation of team rules, which was the only game he missed during his three years as a starter. Has carried upwards of 260 lbs. during his career and weight and conditioning could be an issue. Looked soft.

Red Flags: Weight, Level of Competition

Bottom Line: While Jackson is a limited athlete, he does one thing very well: set the tone. Jackson is a physical striker and lives up to the name “Stonewall.” He likely will have a very limited role at the next level, very he should be able to contribute as a run plugger on first and second downs. Jackson’s appeal will likely to be relegated to teams that play a more physical brand of 34 defense.

Comparison: Jasper Brinkley

Grade: 7.6 (5th Round)
