Knicks Raymond Felton Arrested on Gun Charge

New York Knicks point guard Raymond Felton was arrested late Monday night/early Tuesday Morning, after the Knicks loss to the Dallas Mavericks, and charged with three weapons violations.  The charges come after he allegedly pointed a gun at his estranged wife.

Ariane Raymondo-Felton, Felton’s wife of just 19 months, recently filed for divorce.  Well Felton was on the court against the Mavs, she brought a Belgian-made pistol, an FNH 5.7 x 28mm handgun, to the 20th NYPD Precinct. Felton later turned himself in for questioning at around 12:50 a.m.

“The wife is saying they had four verbal altercations since July last year. On the last one, he pointed a gun at her, loaded. It’s a bad ass gun,” a law enforcement source told The New York Post.

The gun was loaded.  It is unclear what type of ammunition it was loaded with, but it is the type of weapon that can be loaded with high-velocity, armor piercing bullets.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league was monitoring the case. It could fine or suspend Felton but usually waits until after the legal case has been resolved.

Felton is expected to appear in court today.  He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second, third and fourth-degrees as police alledge that the firearm is not legal, and also breaks New York City’s strict gun laws.

Felton reportedly tried to turn the gun over to his divorce lawyer earlier in the week, but the lawyer, Michael Stutman, would not take it.

“I don’t think anybody is allowed to posses an unregistered, unlicensed firearm in the city of New York so certainly anyone who offers one to me will be told politely but firmly no thank you,” Stutman said.

Felton is in the second year of a three-year, $10 million contract with the Knicks.  He is averaging just 10.5 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds per game while shooting 40% and just 28% from beyond the three point line.  These numbers are down across the board for Felton. The Knicks were rumored to be shopping him at the trade deadline but there were no takers.
