ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers to Play Home Games on Roof of Casino

In a story that could only happen in Las Vegas, he local ECHL team has decided to play its home games on the roof of a casino.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the Las Vegas Wranglers have reached a new five-year deal to play their home games on the roof of the Plaza Hotel and Casino.

There will be a $4 million renovation undertaken to the exisiting parking lot on the roof of the hotel that will result in a 3,500-seat fabric-shell arena being installed.  The hotel will also convert the fifth floor of the South Tower into locker rooms, and medical facilities for both the home and visiting teams.  The arena is supposed to be ready for November 2014, and the start of the ECHL season.

The plan was devised by team president Billy Johnson, who came up with the concept to keep the team in Vegas.  The team was unable to reach an agreement to renew their lease in Orleans Arena.

It is expected that visiting teams will stay at the Plaza Hotel.

The plaza hotel is located across from the Freemont Street Experience in the old section of Las Vegas.

The new arena also gives the team the opportunity to expand their annual “midnight game” and have several starts per year starting at this early hour of the morning.

For a picture of exactly where the arena will be situated (on top of the casino, not on top of the high rise hotel) take a look at this picture from the Las Vegas Review Journal.
