Jason Collins Signs with the Brooklyn Nets

The move is now official, the Brooklyn Nets have signed Jason Collins.  Collins has signed a ten-day contract with the team.  The 35-year-old center/power forward has been looking for a contract since being released by the Washington Wizards last year.

Jason Collins Signs with the Brooklyn Nets

Collins, who came out and announced to the world that he was gay in a Sports Illustrated Interview last year will become the first openly gay player to play in a major North American Professional Sports League.  He will add depth to the Nets front court as they continue their push towards the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Collins, is a 14-year NBA veteran who played on both the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards last season.

“The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision,” Nets GM Billy King said in the team’s official release — one which made no mention of Collins’ sexuality.

The Nets had been rumored to be trying to sign Glen Davis, who instead choose to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.

When Collins ten-day contract is up, the Nets will have the option to sign him to a second ten-day deal.  After 20 days, they must either release Collins or sign him for the rest of the season.  The 10-day contract is something that NBA teams typically use when giving a player a tryout at this time of the season.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released the following statement on the Collins signing:

“Jason told us that his goal was to earn another contract with an NBA team. Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal. I know everyone in the NBA family is excited for him and proud that our league fosters an inclusive and respectful environment.”

Collins will be dressed and available to play when the Nets play the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.
