Canada Golden Once More

Canada’s Men’s Hockey Team is Golden once again, successfully defending the 2010 Championship with a 3-0 win over Sweden in today’s gold medal game.  The Canadian team put on a defensive clinic with the strong goaltending of Carey Price, the exceptional play of Drew Doughty, Shea Weber, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and Jay Bouwmeester on defence, and the help of the forwards collapsing on the backcheck.

Canada Golden Once More

Price was fundamentally sound, stopping every shot he faced for two straight games, a 1-0 win over the Americans in the Semi-Final, and today’s gold medal victory.  Overall he gave up only three goals in five tournament games, and just 1 goal in three medal round games.  He looked big in the net and gave up few rebounds.  Price was named Best Goaltender in the tournament, and many felt he should have got MVP, which instead went to Finnish bronze medalist Teemu Selanne.

Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby, and Chris Kunitz all scored their first goals of this tournament, and provided Canada with all the offence they would need in the game.  Crosby’s goal, a breakaway where he deked Henrik Lundqvist late in the second period, was the real backbreaker.  It gave Canada a 2-0 lead, and the Swedes couldn’t seem to muster enough of an offensive challenge from there to make a comeback.

The Swedes, already without Henrik Sedin (pre-tournament injury) and Henrik Zetterberg (back), lost another star centre before the game even began.  Nicklas Backstrom tested positive for a banned stimulant and was held out of the Gold Medal game.

In other tournament news, Erik Karlsson was named best defenceman of the games, and Phil Kessel won the award for top forward.
