Alex Tanguay Undergoes Hip Surgery; Out for the Season

The Colorado Avalanche announced via their twitter account today that forward Alex Tanguay will undergo hip surgery and is out for the rest of the NHL season.

“He’s going to have surgery tomorrow on his hip, but the reason why he is out is for the knee,” Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said after practice Thursday. “The knee isn’t doing better. I guess it’s a mix of the hip and the knee.”

“In the back of our minds, we were hoping not (on surgery), but at the same time with Alex in the lineup I think we are 15-1,” Roy said. “He’s an important player, but I think we did well without him.”

The 34-year-old Tanguay has already missed 36 games this season due to hip and knee injuries he suffered in a November 2nd game against the Montreal Canadiens.  While Tanguay returned to the Avalanche lineup in on January 24th, he was able to play just three games, before re-aggravating the injuries in a January 30th game against the Minnesota Wild.  He missed the Avalanche’s last five games before the break.  Tanguay has four goals and 11 points in his 16 games in the lineup this season.

In 938 career NHL games, Tanguay has 253 goals and 773 points.  He was part of the Avalanche’s 2001 Stanley Cup winning squad.  This is Tanguay’s second stint with the Avalanche, and he was acquired in an off-season trade with the Calgary Flames.

Adrian Dater of The Denver Post says that Alex Tanguay’s injury likely takes P.A. Parenteau’s name off the trade block.  Parenteau had been a healthy scratch recently and was rumored to be in a trade to the Montreal Canadiens for Rene Bourque.
