The Next Step for the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls misguided and unexpected season has been well documented.  With Derrick Rose coming back after a year off due to a torn ACL, many felt this team was equipped to knock off the Heat. But after about 13 games, Rose went down again with a torn meniscus. Even though this injury usually doesn’t sideline athletes for too long, it’s different with Rose, as he will miss the entire season, leaving many fans rolling their eyes with a ‘here we go again’ feeling.  Personally, however, I feel this is the right move by the Bulls organization. Giving Rose a whole season to recover will help his mental and physical heath, even though there is the tendency to want him back on the court.

Right now, things just aren’t looking good in Chicago. It was made official on Monday night that the Bulls would send star centre Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers. I saw this trade coming, but I didn’t think it’d happen this fast. Deng wasn’t just another player – he is an all-star caliber player. His offensive game is solid and his defense is almost perfect.

With all this happening, you have to wonder what else is going to happen in the Windy City. Should they go ahead and rebuild? Should they cut ties with some players?

The Bulls have now lost two pieces of their big-three due to injury and trade. In my eyes, it’s time to rebuild in Chicago. Let this season play out and see what serviceable players you can work with for next season. There are rumors that Kirk Hinrich is being shopped and Carlos Boozer will be amnestied after the season. The Bulls front office needs to be sure both of these tasks are done.

If they do trade Hinrich, you’ll most likely get young talent. If they amnesty Boozer, they will save money.  Those two scenarios are obvious. Now what do you do with all this money? GET A STAR PLAYER.

This is going to be one of the best free agent classes there’s ever been. Do whatever you can to sign Carmelo Anthony. It seems as if his days in a Knicks uniform are numbered. With things going bad in New York, he will want a new start. He’s already said he would be interested in signing with the Bulls, so it shouldn’t be hard to garner interest from his camp.

But if they are not able to sign Anthony, guess who else’s days on their team could be numbered? Derrick Rose. He has already said he wants no part in a rebuilding process. Yes, they still have Jimmy Butler and Joakim Noah, but he will have no chance with this team. He wants to win, and he wants to win now. With a talent like his, he will easily be able to sign with another team. Rose has always said he’d be loyal to Chicago. But if things aren’t working out and they’re not winning, he will leave. I guarantee it.

So with that said, this summer could play a huge role in the future of the Bulls franchise. Fix it quickly, or your star player will be gone.
