Championship Promotion Candidates #1- Queens Park Rangers

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last season; Harry Redknapp’s team were hot choices for the Championship League Title amongst many pre-season prognosticators. With a host of players with experience at the highest echelons of European football. who could blame anyone for thinking that QPR would run away with the Championship League Title.

However the Rangers are not proving to be as dominant as many would have believed before the season. After suffering back-to-back defeats against current second place club Leicester City and the fifth placed club, Nottingham Forest, The Rangers find themselves right in the play-off mix and sitting in a lofty third place. They sit one point away from the fourth placed and in-form squad of Derby County; although they are also just one point off second placed Burnley.  As usual the table is showing just how close this league can be.

The reasons why QPR have not been as strong a force people believed they would be is a bit of a mystery. The squad is clearly composed of a number of players of very high quality. Boasting the likes of former England internationals Robert Greene and Bobby Zamora, England U21 star Tom Carroll and players who have Europa and UEFA Champions League experience such as Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Niko Kranjcar; the squad is probably the best in the league on paper. On top of this, manager Harry Redknapp is a manager with a wealth of experience and tactical knowledge.

QPR may be suffering due to the losses of key players such as Charlie Austin as they did show many strong performances at the start of the year when he was fit and healthy. However, the Christmas period is probably the most important part of the season and QPR’s slight drop in form now may come back to haunt them in May. Because of this drop, I predict that the Rangers will finish in second place. This will see them win automatic promotion but miss out on the Skybet Championship league title.

QPR’s next game is on Sunday when they travel to face Watford.
