The Chicago Bulls fell 98-95 to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday Night, but the loss suffered may resonate far deeper in the windy city.  Star point guard, and former MVP Derrick Rose left the game with a knee injury late in the third quarter and did not return.

The injury appears to be to Rose’s right knee, which of course is NOT the knee he injured during the 2012 NBA Playoffs.  The torn ACL that Rose suffered and the surgery to repair the damage kept the superstar out for the entire 2012-13 NBA season.

The injury occured late in the third quarter when Nicolas Batum stole a pass that Joakim Noah was attempting to make to Rose.  As Rose turned and planted to chase down Batum and defend the ensuing fast break his right knee planted awkwardly and Rose went down in plenty of pain.

At this time the severity of the injury is unclear and Rose is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday.  Rose left the arena on crutches and was not made available to the media for comment after the game.

“He has pain and he felt like he couldn’t push off his right knee,” Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said.

“I’m concerned. Any time anyone goes down, you’re concerned,” he said. “But I don’t want to speculate until we get more information for you guys. We’ll have more [Saturday] for you guys.”

Rose led the Bulls with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists when he left the game.  He is averaging 15.4 points this season.
