Sergei Varlamov Officially Charged With Assault

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Sergei Varlamov has been officially charged with one count of third degree assault after a domestic incident involving his girlfriend last month.  The charges relating to kidnapping have been dropped.

The 25-year-old Varlamov is scheduled to appear in Denver County court on Dec. 2. in a preliminary step in the process.  If convicted, Varlamov could face up to two years in jail.

The alleged incident occurred between Varlamov and his girlfriend on October 28th.  Varlamov turned himself in to police custody and was arrested two days later. He spent the night in jail and was released on bail the next day and continues to be allowed to travel with the team.

The NHL declined to take any action at this time, and commented by releasing an official statement, “We are aware of the decision made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office today to pursue misdemeanor assault charges against Avalanche Player Semyon Varlamov.  While we will continue to monitor the situation, we do not expect to take any action or have any further comment pending the resolution of those charges.”

Varlamov is 11-5-0 this season with 2.23 goals against average and .931 save percentage for the Avalanche.  The team currently sits in third place in the Central Division.
