Things We Learned In College, Week 10

So I didn’t miss anything in the second half of the Florida State-Miami game, did I?

-One of my favorite moments of the Seminoles’ game was watching Jameis Winston engage in some kind of pre-game dance/high-five ritual with a young boy in an FSU jersey. He was probably 10, maybe 11 years old and his jersey said “Fisher” on the back, so I assume he was head coach Jimbo Fisher’s son. Winston’s emergence has been one of my favorite stories of the season, mainly because he comes across as such a cheerful, likeable young man.

Things We Learned in College-Early on, Miami was doing a good job of forcing the Seminoles into third-and-long situations. I’m not even sure they know what happened in the second half, perhaps ESPNU will re-air it today so they can figure out where it all went wrong.

-If Duke Johnson does in fact have a broken ankle and miss the remainder of the season, the ACC Coastal becomes worth keeping an eye on. The U’s remaining games are against Virginia Tech, at Duke, at home against Virginia, and at Pitt.

-Michigan rushed for NEGATIVE 48 yards yesterday. Bo Schembechler must be rolling over in his grave right about now.  Michigan State gets full value for their win.

-It came down to the last second, but Minnesota pulled out another conference win yesterday, this time against Indiana. The Gophers had gone ahead 42-39 on their last drive, and now the Hoosiers were driving. On 2nd-and-goal from the Minnesota nine, quarterback Nate Sudfeld pitched the ball to the running back, who fumbled it, and Minnesota linebacker Aaron Hill recovered. From there, the Gophers could run out the clock. (It should be noted Minnesota at one point led this game 35-13).

-How far has Virginia Tech fallen? With a senior quarterback, albeit one throwing and handing off to a lot of freshmen and sophomores, they’ve lost back-to-back games to DUKE and BC. No, the first one was not a basketball game, and no, the second one was not a hockey game. The Hokies had a lot of turnover on the offensive line this season, which may be contributing to their troubles as well. Logan Thomas did not have great protection at times yesterday. It will be interesting to see where Thomas goes in the draft, given that, in all likelihood, he would have gone quite high last year.

-The Georgia Bulldogs were playing with fire yesterday, letting Florida get back into that game late; but eventually pulled it out on a great final drive to kill the clock.

-Nice job by Missouri to rebound from a tough loss last week.

-Big day for Derek Carr and Fresno State. Carr threw for 487 yards.

And now, the questions I came away with yesterday.

-What’s going on with Oregon State? A 31-14 loss to USC?

-Penn State needed OT to beat 3-5 Illinois?

-What’s happening with TCU?
