Canucks sign Sedins to 4-year Contract Extensions

The Vancouver Canucks have signed their twin Swedish superstars Daniel and Henrik Sedin to a pair of matching 4-year contract extensions.  The deals mean that the 33-year-old twins are now signed through the end of the 2017-18 season.  The deals are for $28 million each, meaning that they will each carry a cap hit of $7 million per season going forward.

The brothers have played their entire career in Vancouver, and were drafted by the Canucks in the first round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.  Daniel was selected second overall and Henrik went third overall after a series of draft day trades by then Canucks GM Brian Burke.

“Daniel and Henrik are exemplary leaders, teammates and humanitarians and we’re very pleased to have them as part of our team for the long-term,” said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. “Few players in the history of this club have had more significant roles in contributing to the success of this team and to our community and we look forward to many more years with their positive influence leading the way.”

Henrik has three goals and 18 points in 15 games this season. He is the Canucks all-time leader in scoring with 810 career points in 955 career games.  He won the Hart and Art Ross Trophies in 2009-10, and was named to the NHL’s first all-star team in 2009-10 and 2010-11.  He is currently the Canucks captain.

Daniel has six goals and 15 points in 15 games this season.  He is considered the sniper on the line, while his brother is the playmaker.  In 921 career games he has 297 career goals and 773 career points, good for 2nd all-time on the Canucks scoring chart.  He won the Art Ross and Ted Lindsay trophies in 2010-11 and was NHL first all-star left wing that year.  He was a second team all-star in 2009-10.

The twins were also part of Sweden’s 2006 Gold Medal winning Olympic Team.  They are expected to play for Sweden in this winter’s Sochi Olympics.
