Giants Mid-Week Report: Short-Week Horror

“Guess what day it is?”

HUMP DAY!

Or, as Giants fans call it this week, “The Day Before 0-6.” Let’s take a look at some of the goings-on headed into Thursday Night tilt against Jay Cutler and the Monsters of the Midway.

David Wilson’s Star-Crossed Career Strikes Again: As if there was any other way, a neck problem will sideline him giving Brandon Jacobs the start tomorrow in Chicago. Unfortunately for the Giants, Jacobs is now officially Christian Okoye all the way down to the complete inability to run. He was completely enveloped by a middling Eagles defense that is widely regarded as among the worst in the league. To take some of the pressure off Jacobs, the Giants brought back Da’Rel Scott. This does not move the needle.

The Giants Will Have To Avoid Turnovers: But considering they’re averaging an inconceivable four a game thus far into the season, it’s hard to envision a clean and crisp game.  The typically stingy Bears defense has forced 14 so far on the season, so something has to give. Protection of the football is always the thing to winning, and that has been problem number one on a litany of sins from these sad-sack Giants. The carelessness of Eli Manning and a butter-fingered running back corps could, and unfortunately, probably will play right into pretty much every defense worth their collective salt.

Jon Beason Will Make His Giants Debut: CHAMPIONSHIP. Okay, probably not. Spencer Paysinger had two good games in a row, so it would be hard to see Beason, who is essentially a rental with serious injury concerns, to unseat him. The lack of attention paid to the linebackers by general-manager Jerry Reese is really starting to show.

The Black Unicorn Could Have a Very Big Night: Former Giant Martellus Bennett was a revelation in his only season with the Giants in 2012. The Giants don’t have anyone who is able to cover him. With the Giants almost certainly doubling Brandon Marshall, Bennett could be getting a lot of targets. By the way, the Giants now have the virtually-invisible Brandon Myers. It would seem likely that the Giants would want a do-over on this switch.

The Giants Are Awful and Still Not Out of It: The glory days of the NFC East is over for the time being. The Giants, sitting at 0-5 are still just two games out. The futility is amazing.

Final Word: I expect the Giants to put up points, but I don’t expect the same problems to remain and the Giants will continue their decent towards a top-five selection in the draft. The Bears will pull away late, 34-24.
