Things We Learned In College, Week 6

Giving my remote control and my thumb a rest this morning- at one point yesterday, I was attempting to watch three football games and a hockey game at the same time. It was worth it though, yesterday was another GREAT day of college football.

Things We Learned in College-Did I really hear some talking heads on TV saying they thought Maryland could upset Florida State? Well, I’m sure the Terps were upset after losing 63-0, if that’s what they meant.

-Just FYI, Jameis Winston has 19 TDs (17 passing, 2 rushing) in six games. That’s one more than Johnny Manziel had through six games last year.

-I’m sure no one was expecting Baylor to repeat last year’s performance against West Virginia and hang 70 on the Mountaineers. Well, they didn’t. They scored 73.

-Georgia was already missing star running back Todd Gurley, who was injured against LSU a week ago. Starting safeties Tray Matthews and Connor Norman missed the game as well. The Dawgs’ other star running back, Keith Marshall, got injured during the game and did not return, as did wideouts Michael Bennett and Justin Scott-Wesley. Even punter Collin Barber got in on the action, leaving with a concussion in the second half. It took the Bulldogs overtime to beat Tennessee; if they want to be contenders in the BCS race, they need to get some of those guys back sooner rather than later.

-Speaking of injuries, it’s already been announced that Texas QB David Ash won’t return from his September 21  concussion- his second of the season- next week against Oklahoma.  Ash returned from his first concussion and played for a half before leaving with his second. Given what we know about brain injuries, Texas should sit him for several weeks, and I’d even suggest looking into a medical redshirt. Brains are not a body part to mess around with.

-Minnesota, as expected, got killed by Michigan yesterday, but I was very impressed by Gophers’ TE Maxx Williams. He’s 6’4″, 254 pounds, and Michigan’s DBs were having a tough time covering him. According to the announcers, he’s been a matchup problem for every team Minnesota has played. Oh, and he’s only a freshman. Keep an eye on this kid.

-Another large freshman to keep an eye on is Mississippi State’s Chris Jones. A 6’5″, 250-pound defensive lineman, he showed up in LSU’s backfield multiple times.

-Something you don’t hear every day: “False start, everyone but the center”. That was an actual call on Mississippi State.

-Nice win Notre Dame, but your uniforms are burning my retinas. Who designed them, RuPaul?

-Kansas punting from their own 1-yard line, 4th and 28. They fake. It doesn’t work. What the hell, Charlie Weis?

-Fantastic effort, Northwestern.

-I can’t believe I forgot to set my DVR for the Stanford-Washington game. Was planning to watch it this morning. From the highlights, it looks like I missed a good one.

Another thing I can’t believe- after all the great football yesterday, today I have to watch the Giants and the Eagles. Ugh. *checks refrigerator for sufficient alcohol*
