An Open Letter To Carmelo Anthony

Dear Mr. Anthony,

Listen, I know we’re a whole season away yet. The highly-anticipated 2014-15 free agency is still a year away, and I get that. But for a short while I ask one favour of you; look at the bigger picture. Here’s why you need the Lakers as much as we need you:

The friendship you and Kobe Bryant share is no secret. We all saw you play together for Team USA in the Olympics last year in absolute perfect harmony. Kobe’s stood up for you before and went in to bat for you when you were in Denver; you had it rough, let’s not lie. You have the same personalities and yeah, you both love to be in control of that rock. But put your egos aside and learn to work as a cohesive unit; you will become the most dominant partnership in the entire NBA.

You don’t like Mike D’Antoni? We’ll get rid of him. Trust me, after the Lakers don’t win the championship this season (and I say this as if I have faced the harsh reality, because, well I have), Mitch Kupchak isn’t going to want to keep him around anyway. Regardless, if it means signing you, he will be shown the door. So that’s that out of the way. What can we do for you?

You want a ring? You’ve got one. You’re going to be playing with Steve Nash, you’re most definitely going to get a season or two with the Black Mamba, Pau Gasol might be kept around and I can’t even begin to imagine the talent we might lure in the free-agency next year. All that aside, you and Kobe alone can take down the best in the game together.

You want to reclaim Los Angeles? Take down Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. You want revenge on Dwight Howard for your new team? Dominate him and James Harden. And you really want to shut up Miami don’t you? Do it. With you two on the same team, you can do it all.

Kobe hasn’t got many good years left. The greatest player of all time (okay, debatable) is getting older and older and I am dreading the day my idol and hero leaves my team. That being said, when he does, there is room for a franchise superstar. Somebody to represent that team like Bryant has. Somebody to take the most popular and highly regarded team in all of basketball history and be the face of the franchise. Do you want that? Have it! It’s yours.

I speak on behalf of most fans when I say, we never really liked Howard. Yeah, he brought us a lot of talent and that’s cool and all, but when you don’t give it your all, when you rubbish your supporters or when you ‘secretly’ try and take the franchise away from Bryant, you’re going to be hated.

We want you, because you bring us talent. But you’re also going to get support from the most loyal and dedicated fan-base in the sporting world. Now, who wouldn’t want that?

By all means, go hard this season. When you play the Lakers, give it your all, beat us, I don’t mind. But keep Los Angeles in the back of your mind. We want you in 2014-15 and you should want us. Good luck Mr Anthony. And I hope to see you in purple and gold this time next year.

Regards,

Lakers Fans
