Homer Bailey threw a no-hitter against the defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. Bailey took just 109 pitches to complete the feat, and was one walk away (a 7th inning free pass to Gregor Blanco) from a perfect game. The Reds would win the game 3-0. Bailey also threw the last no-hitter in the majors, when he no hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 28, 2012.
Bailey becomes just the 28th pitcher in MLB history to have thrown multiple no-hitters. Three other active MLB pitchers have thrown two no-hitters, they are Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay and Mark Buehrle.
“It’s something I’ve already done, so I knew what to expect,” Bailey said of his feat.
Bailey faced just 28 batters in his no-hitter, inducing Blanco into a ground out to third baseman Todd Frazier to complete the no-no. Frazier made the throw to Reds first baseman Joey Votto to complete a quick and efficient night for Bailey. Bailey finished with nine strikeouts.
“It was a pretty easy no-hitter,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We didn’t hit too many balls hard. There weren’t any tough plays. We only hit a couple balls decent. He was really overmatching us all night.”
This was the first no-hitter of the 2013 Major League season. There were seven no-hitters in 2012.
